I inherited my love of gardening from my mother and grandmother. I am a garden blogger, freelance writer, and Master Gardener emeritus.

For sauce and tomato paste

Pompeii is a determinate tomato that produces loads of red, sauce type tomatoes. This F-1 Pompeii (Lycopersicon esculentum) will produce tomatoes in 76 days. Expect clusters of long, sausage shaped fruits, each weighing 4-6 ounces.

These flavorful rosy red tomatoes are excellent for making sauces and paste. Seed are an exclusive of Renee's Garden. Pompeii seed are imported from Italy where they know a thing or two about tomatoes.

Tall and productive, this Italian hybrid produces loads of meaty, rich-flavored plum tomatoes for fresh eating or sauce. Because these tomatoes are not as juicy as the big slicing tomatoes, they are ideal for cooking and reducing down to sauces.

Every garden needs a 'Roma' type tomato. These meaty tomatoes are known as sauce or paste tomatoes; great for cooking and preserving. As a time saver during the busiest and hottest time of the year, freeze the tomatoes whole.

I love this tip from Renee's Garden “We like to freeze them whole, then make sauce later when the weather is cold and miserable, and making big pots of tomato sauce is fragrant fun.”

This hybrid is disease resistant to Verticillium Wilt (V) Fusarium Wilt (F). Pompeii is a big tomato vine but it is determinate, making it suitable for containers. These tomatoes, planted in containers, make great pillars standing at the patio or garden entrance.

This is a beautiful tomato. Include a paste tomato in your garden. Next winter when you have your own homemade spaghetti, sauce, you will be impressed all over again.

Try "sun-dried" tomatoes without the sun

They may be called "sun-dried" tomatoes but almost no one lives in a climate that makes "sun-dried" an ideal method. According to the USDA, most store-bought "sun dried" tomatoes are not dried in the sun. Using a food dehydrator is faster and safer.

Sun dried tomatoes are usually an expensive gourmet item. Try making your own. They taste even better.

You can only find these Italian paste tomato seed at Renee's Garden. There is enough seed for you to grow it tree years in a row. I grew them for a third year this spring with 100% germination. Seeds are imported from Italy exclusively for Renee's Gardens
