I inherited my love of gardening from my mother and grandmother. I am a garden blogger, freelance writer, and Master Gardener emeritus.

Mild, sweet, meaty Gold Medal

Gold Medal's big indeterminate vines and heavy fruit needs sturdy staking or cages. Expect 1 to 2 pound beefsteak type tomatoes. Regular leaf plants, are vigorous and need consistent water to produce big tomatoes.

Slice any two of these tomatoes, one will be mostly yellow while the other is heavily streaked with red radiating from the blossom end. Every tomato is slightly different when sliced.

These smooth surfaced tomatoes have firm flesh that is sweet and mild. Fans love the juicy, low acid taste.

Introduced as Ruby Gold in 1921. The legendary seed collector Ben Quisenberry renamed it Gold Medal and listed it in his 1976 catalog. He wrote “The sweetest tomato you ever tasted. The yellow with streaks of red makes them very attractive and a gourmet’s joy when sliced.”

Today's Harvest: six,1 to 2 pound Gold Medal tomatoes
